Seek the Lord while he is still to be found.
It is not those who say to me Lord, Lord, who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but those who do the will of my Father in heaven.
Blessed John Henry Newman said, ‘I do not ask to see the distant scene; one step enough for me.’ Blessed John Henry Newman understood well the daily call to holiness. Our Lord invites us to pray to our heavenly Father for our daily bread, for the strength and nourishment we need to get through each day, and to try and live a life pleasing to God. Every new day presents the opportunity for us to know a birth within us of the Eternal Word. This comes about when our hearts are open to his presence and to doing his will. This happens when we set aside time to listen to the Father: ‘He wakens me by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught’ (Isaiah 50:4).
Lord God, you are the One who gives us the day and the things that are necessary for the day.
