Sunday 8 January
Epiphany of the Lord
We have seen his star in the East and have come with gifts to adore the Lord. (Communion Antiphon)
Matthew 2:11
Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.
The wise men came in search of the Messiah. They came to the stable in Bethlehem bearing gifts and to worship and adore. The search for God is the deepest stirring of the human heart. The coming of Jesus, the Light of the World and Messiah of Israel, is the dawning of every human hope and dream. God’s message of salvation began in Israel but, in the coming of Jesus, is offered to everyone. We have confidence in the gospel to transform not just our own lives, but the whole world. Because of this we are not afraid, or timid, or shy or ashamed of the gospel. Rather, we are bold and confident. By the witness of life and the promises of Christ we proclaim that Jesus is the hope of our world.
Lord God, we have inherited the blessings and grace of Israel in the promised Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. Today we adore, praise and give you thanks.
