From oppression he will rescue their lives
(Ps 71:14).
1 John 4:20
A man who does not love the brother that he can see cannot love God, whom he has never seen.
What is peace? It isn’t simply the absence of war or conflict. It is something greater, deeper and more lasting. First and foremost interior peace is knowing the peace of God in our hearts. This peace is the blessing of the knowledge of our salvation and reconciliation with God. ‘Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ’ (Romans 5:1). As the saying goes, ‘No God, no peace. Know God, know peace.’ This peace overflows, fostering peace with our neighbour, our friends, those we live with and those we rub up against every day. This peace gives us resilience, courage and persistence, because resolving the conflicts, misunderstandings and disagreements in our lives can be hard work indeed!
‘My soul can see no other remedy pleasing to God than peace. Peace, peace, peace then, for the love of Christ crucified.’ (St Teresa of Avila)
