St Matthias
You did not choose me, no, I chose you, go out and bear fruit that will last. (John 15:16)
Acts 1:15-17, 20-26
He was one of our number and shared in this ministry.
St Matthias was among the disciples gathered in the Upper Room and was selected by lot to replace Judas. To enter the lot you needed to have been with the Lord since the beginning of his ministry and witnessed his Ascension into heaven. The lot fell to St Matthias and he was elected as one of the Twelve. After his brief appearance in today’s reading we hear nothing more about him. Tradition has it that he preached the gospel and was eventually martyred. We too have been chosen by the grace of our baptism to take our place among the saints in eternal life. We have living in us an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade which is kept in heaven for us.
