The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.
We are encouraged to forego meat on Fridays and, on occasions, fast as well. Through this discipline we can feel real pangs of hunger. Hunger, in a world of plenty is a terrible scandal. We show through acts of self-denial our solidarity and love for those whom deprivation is a fact of life. Abstinence sharpens us, it makes us sober and alert; making us more aware of the needs of others. Our focus should be on the sweet blessing of fasting rather than its bitter taste. For St John Chrysostom fasting brings us into God’s presence: ‘Fasting is the support of our soul: it gives us wings to ascend on high and enjoy the highest contemplation.’
Lord, may our Friday abstinence always turn us to you who alone can satisfy our deepest longings.
