Resurrection Joy

On the Day of Pentecost St Peter was a transformed man. He was once a coward; he was once weak, fearful and inarticulate; he was once easily confused, stubborn and dull to the truths of God. On the Day of Pentecost this changed forever.

The Power of the Resurrection

St Paul considered everything as utterly meaningless and worthless compared with possessing Christ. This brilliant and supremely able man, many years after his conversion, said that more than anything else he wanted to know Christ and the power of his resurrection (Phil. 3:10). He wanted the transforming power of Jesus’ resurrection life to be ever increasing within him so that God’s grace and power would permeate his life and radiate out through him, and he would attain the very likeness of Christ himself.

Sister Wendy Becket

This month we are most grateful to the art historian Sr Wendy Beckett for helping us appreciate more fully the conversion of St Paul in the work of three great artists: Caravaggio, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Francesco Parmigianino.  The conversion of St Paul on the road to Damascus was the major turning point in his life because his encounter with the Living Christ changed his life forever. We invite you to contemplate and pray on the paintings and be guided by the insight and wisdom of Sr Wendy as she leads us in a Lenten reflection on the meaning not only of St Paul’s conversion but of our own call to be always seeking ongoing and life-long conversion to Christ.

A Gospel New Year

Every New Year is a special time, inviting us to look back on the year that has gone and look forward to the year that is to come. The new gives way to the old, the relentless passage of time closes the door on one chapter and opens gently upon another. The New Year ushers in an exciting sense of renewal, recommitment and new horizons as resolutions are made and new opportunities are considered. It is a time that lends itself readily to examination, reflection and prayer.

Pope Benedict on Church Unity

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an important event in the life of the Church. There are two very important ideas at the heart of this week and they are love and prayer. Love and prayer have to be at the heart of all our efforts and endeavours as we strive to be faithful to Jesus’ prayer ‘that they may be one even as we are one’ (John 17:22). Pope Benedict himself is a wonderful example of this ‘spiritual ecumenism’ rooted in love and prayer and we sit at his feet and learn from him. We invite you to pray on his words because they will lead you to pray more earnestly for unity and understand it as the gift of the Holy Spirit that it is.

Dietriech Bonhoeffer

Pope John Paul II, in his encyclical on Christian Unity, Ut unum sint, pointed to the martyr witness of men and women from other Christian denominations who had laid down their lives for Christ as powerful and eloquent proof that disunity and division can be overcome as the Church seeks to be faithful to Jesus’ command that she be one as the Father and he are One. ‘These brothers and sisters of ours, united in the selfless offering of their lives for the Kingdom of God, are the most powerful proof that every factor of division can be transcended and overcome in the total gift of self for the sake of the Gospel’ (para. 1).

Prison

Jesus was a prisoner. So too was St John the Baptist, St Peter and St Paul. Jesus identified with prisoners, teaching that to visit one was to visit him (he did not make a distinction between whether they were guilty or not.

Church, Renewal and the Bible

This month bishops from around the world convene in Rome for a synod to discuss the overarching theme of the Word of God in the life and mission of the Church. This is a theme very dear to our hearts at Bible Alive. Our daily reflections are rooted and grounded in the liturgical rhythm of the Church and what is beautiful about following the liturgical cycle in this way is that wherever you are in the world (accounting, of course, for national and local feast days) the same readings from the Bible are proclaimed in the Liturgy of the Word. We believe that there can be ‘no authentic renewal of the Church without a return to the biblical sources. The Scriptures ‘are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus’ (2 Tim. 3:15). The Word of God is central to the renewal of the liturgy and central to the whole life of faith. Access to the Bible is for all the faithful.’

A Pilgrim's Resource

For many years now Bible Alive has published a Prayer Diary which has become for thousands of people a vital resource on their Christian journey – a pilgrim’s resource, if you like.

Our Bible Alive Liturgical Diary offers a rich range of features which are designed to help us in our daily walk with the Lord:

•    All of the Daily and Sunday Mass Readings
•    Feasts and Solemnities
•    2009 Page per Month Calendar
•    Daily Vestment Colours
•    Quotes from the Early and Late Church Fathers, Saints and Heroes of Faith
•    Cycle of Prayer
•    Psalter Weeks
•    Week to View Diary
In addition to all of the above, many have given us feedback over the years that they use the Bible Alive Liturgical Diary as a spiritual journal, in which they record their daily walk with the Lord. Such a record or note does not need to be long and copious, gradually turning the daily exercise into a burden or chore. Our readers tell us that what they enjoy about the Diary is that it enables them to make a brief comment/reflection/thought – a daily task that can be done quickly at the end of a busy day.
