In this Year of Faith declared by Pope Benedict we are encouraged to grow and mature in our faith, however the church recognizes that there are obstacles to faith and these include scandal and bad witness (Catechism of the Catholic Church 29). The child abuse tragedy which has engulfed the Church has been a cause of great pain, suffering and scandal which has undermined and challenged the faith of many.
Melinda Gates, wife of Microsoft founder Bill, wants her enormous wealth to benefit the poorest of the poor in the developing world. Her giving, she tells Joanna Moorhead, has its roots in her Catholic upbringing, and in the Church’s social teaching.
Those words were first belted out more than 40 years ago in the best-known passion play of modern times – Jesus Christ Superstar. Four decades on, as a new production of the globally-renowned musical prepares to open in London, Faith Today looks back at its sometimes controversial history – and the role the Vatican played in making it a success.
Back in 1968, a Catholic couple opened a small bakery next door to their house to feed their growing family. Four decades on, their six sons are running one of Northern Ireland’s most flourishing businesses – and supplying their scones and soda bread to a supermarket near you. Joanna Moorhead went to meet them.
