Daily Reflections
Deuteronomy 31:1-8 • St Clare (Memorial)
History has produced many fine examples of the art of leadership. In our own time President Barack Obama is heralded as one who displays all the qualities of a true leader. His leadership has yet to stand the test of time, unlike that of the inspiring and courageous Nelson Mandela, who is for many the paragon of a true leader. We Catholics look to St Peter’s successor Pope Benedict XVI as our leader and before him Pope John Paul II whose leadership skills were legendary and awesome. Today the liturgy invites us to reflect on one of the Bible’s great leaders: Moses.
There are two striking qualities which Moses possessed and which those who are in positions of leadership (parents, bishops, priests, deacons) would do well to reflect upon. The first is his humility. Moses was renowned for being humble (Num. 12:3). This quality is wonderfully illustrated in today’s reading in the way that, now at the end of his life, he accepts God’s will that he will not be the person to lead the people into the Promised Land. Moses was able to accept and embrace God’s plan because he had received from God the gift of leadership.
He knew when to lead and he knew when it was time to step aside. He had a clear vision; he was dogged, persevering and possessed of iron discipline; and he was dedicated to humbly serving God and his people.
The second quality Moses possessed – and this is what sets him apart as an outstanding leader – is that he constantly pointed the people to God and not himself. His vision was rooted in encouraging people, giving them hope, spurring them on to live for God. Listen to his words, and if you are in a position of leadership use them to encourage and build up the people you serve: ‘Be strong and of good courage, do not fear or be in dread of them: for it is the Lord your God who goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you’ (v. 6).
These words were echoed by the late great Pope John Paul II: ‘Do not be afraid even of your own weakness and inadequacy! The Divine Master has said, ‘I am with you always, until the end of the world.’ (Mt 28:20). Communicate the message of Christ with love, compassion and clarity, for Christ is with you, even until the end of time.’
