A New Shepherd for Birmingham
BERNARD LONGLEY was named the ninth Archbishop of Birmingham on 1 October 2009 and installed on 8 December 2009, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Not long after the announcement of his appointment, Bible Alive, whose offices are situated within the Birmingham see, met with him to discuss his hopes, his aspirations and the challenge before him of leading this large and dynamic archdiocese.
Vocation to the Priesthood
A Leap of Faith Challenge
Pope Benedict has declared a Year of the Priest. The vocation to be a priest is a high and noble one and we at Bible Alive during the course of this year will seek to highlight the beauty and dignity of the priestly vocation.
Fr Peter Norton and Fr James Mealy took part in a charity fund-raising event for the sick, infirm and elderly priests of the Archdiocese of Birmingham. During the event they spoke to Bible Alive about what made them want to embrace the adventure of the priestly vocation.

Thoughts on St Paul
We will now be working in collaboration with the Vatican Publishing House to publish and distribute a wide and diverse range of books and resources which will celebrate, teach and proclaim the treasure and riches which is our faith.
The first of our collaborations is a wonderful book by Pope Benedict on the life
and witness of St Paul compiled from the Holy Father’s homilies, audiences and encyclicals since his pontificate began.
Who are you, Lord?
Bishop David McGough, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Birmingham and a scripture scholar, considers and examines for readers of Bible Alive, the profound impact of St Paul’s road to Damascus conversion in which he was thrown to the ground and asked the question, 'Who are you, Lord?'
Bernadette at the Cachot
by Fr Philip Griffin
Parish Priest of Holy Trinity, Newcastle under Lyme. Chaplain to the sick at Lourdes for the Birmingham Diocese
Mention has already been made of the Cachot – a word which means jail or dungeon – as we have followed Saint Bernadette and her family from the security of life at the Boly Mill, to their financial downfall into homelessness and impoverishment. By the end of 1856 the family were bankrupt and homeless, and were offered the shelter of the Cachot, which was owned by their cousins, as a refuge in a time of sheer desperation and hopelessness.
Accueil Notre Dame Hospital
We are delighted to present our second edition of our Lourdes Special. We have focused on the Accueil Notre Dame Hospital because in so many ways this is what Lourdes is all about – serving, caring and being available for the sick.
The Archdiocese of Birmingham Pilgrimage to Lourdes is a unique event. It is a wonderful experience to see the diocese working and pulling together to worship God and serve others.
The fun, the friendship, the love and the joy, so evident and apparent at Lourdes, is an inspiration and a great source of encouragement as our Lourdes Special edition illustrates!
Bible Alive spent time in the Accueil with Dr Crosby, a retired GP from Nuneaton, who by her witness and in so many ways shows us what Lourdes is all about – serving the sick and bearing witness to the compassion and love of Christ.
