Bible Alive Articles

Monsignor Paul Watson, Director of the Maryvale Institute Birmingham offers us a new, fresh and lively insight into the mystery of Jesus’ Transfiguration whose feast day we celebrate on August 6.

Bishop David McGough, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Birmingham and a scripture scholar, considers and examines for readers of Bible Alive, the profound impact of St Paul’s road to Damascus conversion in which he was thrown to the ground and asked the question, 'Who are you, Lord?'

On October 16 this year we will celebrate the life and witness of St Gerard Majella. This great hero of holiness died aged only twenty nine but in his short but fruitful life left a fragrant legacy of one dedicated and committed to serving and loving God and neighbour, especially expectant mothers!

29 June marked the beginning of the Year of St Paul. When Pope Benedict XVI announced this special Year, he explained that he intended it to be a year in which the Church celebrates St Paul’s life and dedicates itself to reflecting, praying and celebrating the lasting and outstanding contribution of this great witness, martyr and saint.
The apparitions of Our Lady to Bernadette took place at the grotto of Massabielle over a five month period, beginning with the first appearance of the mysterious lady on Thursday, 11th February 1858, and ending on 16th July 1858. The apparitions varied in their length, and in the nature of the encounter between Bernadette and Our Lady. When they began, Bernadette was alone – by the end there were thousands of people present. Sometimes Our Lady had a message – that a chapel should be built, and people come in a procession, that we must pray and do penance for our sins. Sometimes Bernadette came simply to pray. Slowly but surely the significance of what was happening spread throughout the town of Lourdes, across France and throughout the world.

Mention has already been made of the Cachot – a word which means jail or dungeon – as we have followed Saint Bernadette and her family from the security of life at the Boly Mill, to their financial downfall into homelessness and impoverishment. By the end of 1856 the family were bankrupt and homeless, and were offered the shelter of the Cachot, which was owned by their cousins, as a refuge in a time of sheer desperation and hopelessness.

Dr Pat Crosby is the Medical Director of the Lourdes Pilgrimage. She is a retired GP from Nuneaton who dedicates her time to ensuring that the sick of the pilgrimage are cared for.

Bible Alive met up with her to talk about her favourite subject – Lourdes!

We are delighted to present our second edition of our Lourdes Special. We have focused on the Accueil Notre Dame Hospital because in so many ways this is what Lourdes is all about – serving, caring and being available for the sick.
The Archdiocese of Birmingham Pilgrimage to Lourdes is a unique event. It is a wonderful experience to see the diocese working and pulling together to worship God and serve others.
The fun, the friendship, the love and the joy, so evident and apparent at Lourdes, is an inspiration and a great source of encouragement as our Lourdes Special edition illustrates!

Bible Alive spent time in the Accueil with Dr Crosby, a retired GP from Nuneaton, who by her witness and in so many ways shows us what Lourdes is all about – serving the sick and bearing witness to the compassion and love of Christ.

Brian Jones is the Chief Brancardia and Chairman of the Hospitality Committee for the Archdiocese of Birmingham Lourdes Pilgrimage. Bible Alive met up with him to talk about his role as Chief Brancardia about what his twenty-year involvement in Lourdes means to him:
